The Shakeout: Say Goodbye to 21 Domains.
May 24th, 2007 by Xangis
Throughout the past six months, especially in March, I’ve been on something of a buying spree for domains. I’ve done quite a lot of brainstorming, and in the process I’ve bought every domain that seemed like a good idea to me. As of this moment I own 47 domains. That’s far too many to develop actively, and by now I have a decent idea of what domains I’m going to spend the time to develop and what domains don’t grab my fancy enough to keep.
After going through the collection I’ve found 21 that I know that I won’t have the time or motivation to develop fully. They’re all good ideas — I wouldn’t have bought them if I wasn’t convinced that they were, and I’m still convinced, they’re just not somewhere I want to put my time.
Although it’s one of the worst markets for domains, I’ve put them up on eBay. None of them are old or established enough that they’ll fetch a high price, but at least I’ll have them out of my space. I don’t know about other people, but clutter saps my energy. Looking at a domain management panel and seeing twice as much as I need to just kind of steals my motivation (I have SOOOO much work to do that I’m tired already syndrome).
Here’s a link to my eBay auctions so you can see which ones didn’t make the cut:

The best package is probably the Indie Challenge set. It’s an awesome idea, but running them and getting them started up would take as much or more time and effort than running a magazine. If I could do twelve things at once I would totally hang on to them, but I can only do two things at once (one task for each monitor + CPU core combo in my computer).
In conversations that I’ve had with successful webmasters, most of them say the biggest mistake they made when first starting out was trying to focus on too many projects at once instead of getting one finished/build and moving on to the next.
The only project I officially consider finished is the leftistblogs.com site, and that’s because it updates itself automatically.
