Yesterday I attended a seminar at the local chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives called “Get Your Business Up and Running”.
It was a good seminar and well worth the $40 to attend. Guest speakers (mostly accountants) covered various topics on financial management, business entities, tax strategy, record keeping, and marketing. Although a lot of it wasn’t new information since I already HAVE my business up and running, there was still quite a bit that I wouldn’t have known or thought of.
Even so, without the presentation, having all those veteran entrepreneurs available to answer questions was quite valuable. For anyone who is considering starting a business but doesn’t know the next step(s) to take, I highly recommend finding your local chapter of SCORE and going to a few seminars.
I’ve signed up for a couple more over the next month or so — the ‘Maintaining Business Records’ seminar and ‘Financial Planning for your Business’ seminar. I’m sure those will be worth the paltry $30 for the evening.
I haven’t looked into the free counseling that SCORE offers, but just knowing that’s available gives me a bit more confidence that I’ll be able to get help in executing an idea if I need it.
