Most sci-fi shows fail to make it past the fourth season. I’m convinced it’s because there’s a limited number of plots that can be done on a spaceship, at least by below-average writers (as in, writers who aren’t good enough to write for Stargate SG-1.)
There’s a certain point, usually in the fourth season, that […]

I managed to wipe out the boot loader for Vista yesterday.
Here’s how to restore it.
1. Boot from Vista CD.
2. Enter your language info and hit next.
3. Go to the console (bottom option on the menu that comes up).
4. Go to your CD drive. If it’s drive E, type ‘E:\’.
5. Change to the boot directory by […]

This blog had been stagnating over at survivingwithoutajob.com for quite a while.
The problem is that the domain didn’t really suit my current focus. Survival isn’t exactly a lofty goal, you know. It should have been titled “thrivingwithmyownkickassbusiness.com” but I can’t type that.
So, the focus of this thing will more likely gravitate toward life and my […]

If you don’t know what a multi-user dungeon is you may not want to read this post.
First there was Sojourn (also known as TorilMUD), a non-PvP MUD based loosely on the Forgotten Realms. It was created around 1992.
Somewhere between 1994 and 1996, a PvP version of Sojourn split off and called itself Duris. […]

Throughout the past six months, especially in March, I’ve been on something of a buying spree for domains. I’ve done quite a lot of brainstorming, and in the process I’ve bought every domain that seemed like a good idea to me. As of this moment I own 47 domains. That’s far too many to develop […]

I’ve made use of some more of the samples I’ve been gathering. There’s a great Linux-based drum machine called Hydrogen (it runs on Windows and MacOS too), and I’ve made two drumkits for it. One is based on the Yamaha TG-55 tone generator and the other is based on the Kawai XD-5 drum synthesizer. I’ve […]

I’ve managed to offload almost all of my synthesizers via eBay. Only five remain of the original 20, and one of those will be leaving soon. The keepers: Ensoniq SQ-80, Yamaha TG-33, Yamaha TX81z, and Yamaha TG-77.
The last one to leave is going to be the Alesis Fusion 8HD. It’s very powerful, […]

Of the five distributors I’ve contacted I’ve heard back from two. Luckily it’s the most important two: Disticor and Ingram Periodicals.
I’ve just sent off my registration packet along with a check for $250 to Ingram for their registration/listing fee (highway robbery if you ask me, but let’s call it an investment). Disticor doesn’t require any […]

It was an 11-hour-long tax form session.
The tax system is unbearably and unnecessarily complicated and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t do anyone any good to have it that complicated - at least not those paying or receiving the taxes, it’s just the intermediaries that benefit.
Why was it so rough?
Last summer I had a severe garage […]

I spent some time today browsing small-press book and anthology publishers trying to get more information about how they run and the way they do business.
The reason I’m doing this research is because I’ve discovered that there is a serious lack of markets for fantasy and science fiction in the Novelette to Novella range, i.e. […]
